Chapter 27

“The sewers!” Mayto exclaimed. “Why do we have to go in via the sewers when Elliot gets to go in via the hangar?”

“Because it’s the safest way for us to get into the base without being seen,” Dax replied.

Mayto grunted. “I’m not worried about being seen!”

Dax sighed. “Are you still upset about that?”

“Well, it’s not fair, is it?”

“I’m sure Elliot didn’t do it intentionally, Mayto.”

“Six of them, Dax! All on his own, and he got to use a cannon on them too... How’s that fair?”

“It’s not, but I’m sure you’ll get your chance to even things out.”

“Not with a cannon, I bet,” Mayto sulked. “How much further is it, anyway?”

Dax consulted his CDU. “Not far now, it should be just over that next ridge.”

Mayto grunted again. “Six Telvanni...and a cannon!”

They trekked across the rocky surface of Titan for another ten minutes. The rough terrain of the ridge proved a moderate challenge after their previous climb out of the hole they’d fallen in.

“We’re here,” Dax announced as they approached what appeared to be the start of another ridge.

“I don’t see anything,” Mayto said, his confusion evident as he scanned the area, seeing nothing but another icy rock face.

“It’s here. It’s just hidden... like the hangar on Lunar,” Dax explained. He pressed a button on his CDU, and after a moment, a gap appeared where the ground met the rocky wall, slowly rising. An entrance, narrow and just wide enough for a single person to enter at a time, sloped downward into the darkness.

“You want us to go in there?” Mayto asked skeptically, looking into the darkness. “What’s down there, anyway?”

“It’s an emergency exit for the maintenance areas. There are a few of these scattered across the surface, but they’re pretty much abandoned, seeing how there’s never been an emergency.”

“You say ‘maintenance area,’ but you’re just trying to make it sound more appealing than sewers, aren’t you?”

Standing at the entrance with his hands on his hips, Mayto peered down into the darkness. He was about to step inside but paused, glancing back at Dax. “How do I know this isn’t you leading me into a trap?”

Dax sighed, shaking his head slightly. “Why don’t I just go first?” He stepped forward to pass Mayto, but a massive arm shot out, blocking his path.

“No, I don’t think so. I’ll go first... I’m not having you tell Elliot I was at the back when we first stepped foot into Titan.”

Mayto stepped into the darkness, the light filtering in from outside just bright enough to prevent his helmet from switching to night mode. In fact, it never switched at all. After walking ten paces, the ground leveled out, and as he took his first step on the even surface, the tunnel ahead softly illuminated. A narrow passage, no more than four feet wide, stretched in a straight line. Soft lighting glowed from where the wall met the ceiling, stretching down the tunnel and ending fifty meters ahead at what Mayto assumed was a door.

“That’s the airlock at the far end,” Dax said, closing the entrance behind him.
